New windows, more insulation, weather stripping around doors and window
openings, and calk every crack, the list of items to make your home
more efficient and weather resistant are causing tighter homes.
Gas burning furnaces need fresh "combustion air"
to mix with the fuel that burns in your furnace to create the heat
that your home needs during those cold winter days.
It's the Code!
Many city and county ordinances and codes now
require a source of fresh air to be available at both the furnace
and hot water heater locations in order to ensure your equipment can
burn it's fuel properly.
No more is it allowed in most all cities and counties to use "house
air" to ensure proper air/gas mixtures for your furnace and
hot water heater.
The theory is that there is a posibility that you could deplete the
oxygen within your house during the winter months and also "starve"
your furnace of the proper availability and mixture of air that will
be needed to safely and properly operate your furnace and hot water
heater.
